  • Richard L. Lindstrom, M.D.

    Ophthalmologist

    Dr. Lindstrom is the founder and attending surgeon at Minnesota Eye Consultants and an internationally recognized leader in corneal, cataract, refractive, glaucoma and laser surgery. He currently serves as an Adjunct Clinic Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota Department of Ophthalmology, and visiting professor at the UC Irvine Gavin Herbert Eye Institute. He has been at the forefront of ophthalmology’s evolutionary changes throughout his career, as a recognized researcher, teacher, inventor, writer, lecturer and highly acclaimed physician and surgeon. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Lindstrom completed his doctorate degree in medicine in 1972. He conducted research, residency and fellowship training in cornea at the University of Minnesota and affiliated hospitals and extended his anterior segment surgery fellowship training at Mary Shiels Hospital in Dallas followed by a Heed Fellowship in Glaucoma at University Hospital in Salt Lake City, after two years of private practice in Dallas, TX. In 1980 Dr. Lindstrom returned to the University of Minnesota, where he spent ten years on the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology, the last two as a full professor and the Harold G. Scheie Research Chair. He continues as Adjunct Clinical Professor Emeritus, Chairman of the Vision Foundation, a board director for the University of Minnesota Foundation and Associate Director of the Lions Gift of Sight (formerly the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank). He entered private practice in 1989 and has led the growth and expansion of Minnesota Eye Consultants having served as managing partner for 15 years. He is also co-medical director of Precision Lens and Refractec. He is Chief Medical Editor of the USA and International editions of Ocular Surgery News, which reaches 82,000 ophthalmologists worldwide. Dr. Lindstrom has been awarded over 40 patents in ophthalmology and has developed a number of corneal preservation solutions, intraocular lenses and instruments that are used in clinical practices globally. He serves on many Board of Directors and is a frequent lecturer throughout the world on cornea, cataract, glaucoma, laser and refractive surgery. Dr. Lindstrom serves on a number of journal editorial boards, including JCRS and JRS. He is the Honorary Editor-in-Chief of the U.S./Chinese Journal of Ophthalmology. He has co-edited seven books, published over 350 peer reviewed journal articles and 60 book chapters. His professional affiliations are extensive. Dr. Lindstrom lives in Minneapolis on the shores of Lake Minnetonka with his wife Jaci and has two children and 5 grandchildren.

  • Thomas W. Samuelson, M.D.

    Ophthalmologist

    Thomas W. Samuelson, a founding partner and attending surgeon of Minnesota Eye Consultants, is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in the treatment of glaucoma, cataract, and refractive surgery. Dr. Samuelson completed his medical degree at the University of Minnesota and his residency training at the University of South Florida where he served as chief resident. He received his sub-specialty training at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. An adjunct professor of ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota and past chairman of the medical staff at the Phillips Eye Institute in Minneapolis, Dr. Samuelson has an active role in the education of medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians. He is a faculty member at Hennepin County Medical Center, a major teaching hospital for the University of Minnesota residency program. On a national level, Dr. Samuelson is the current president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is the recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Junior and Senior Achievement Awards honoring contributions made to the Academy’s educational programs. In 2018, Dr. Samuelson was awarded the AAO Lifetime Achievement Award. He also received the “Secretariate Award” for contributions to the AAO annual meeting. Dr. Samuelson has served as an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology and has been named as America’s Top Doctors each year since 2002. He is past-president of the International Society of Spaeth Fellows – Wills Eye Hospital’s Glaucoma Fellows Society. Dr. Samuelson served on the executive committee of the American Glaucoma Society for nearly a decade. Dr. Samuelson is the glaucoma section editor for Ocular Surgery News, the most widely circulated ophthalmology news publication worldwide. Dr. Samuelson also serves as editorial board member and scientific reviewer for several ophthalmology journals. Dr. Samuelson’s research interests include MIGS surgical procedures involving Schlemm Canal as well as the management of coincident cataract and glaucoma. He has also performed research on the safety of LASIK in patients with other ocular disorders, especially glaucoma. A frequent lecturer nationally and internationally on ocular surgery, he has published numerous scientific manuscripts and textbook chapters on ophthalmic surgery. On a personal note, Dr. Samuelson enjoys music, theater, golf, ice hockey, and running.

    Dr. David Hardten, a board-certified ophthalmologist and founding partner of Minnesota Eye Consultants, is one of the nation’s most prominent leaders in the treatment of the cornea, external disease, anterior segment, cataract, refractive and laser surgery – as well as in research and education. As director for Minnesota Eye Consultants’ Clinical Research Department, Dr. Hardten leads research projects surrounding LASIK Eye Surgery, refractive surgery, complex case management, cataract surgery, natural lens replacement surgery, glaucoma management, corneal transplantation, iris reconstruction, surgical instrumentation and drug therapies. Dr. Hardten has received numerous awards for his dedication to the eye care industry including the 2011 Casebeer Award for outstanding contribution to the research and development of refractive surgery from the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the 2011 Allina HOPE (Hospital Outstanding Patient Experience) Award, and the 2010 American Academy of Ophthalmology Lifelong Education for the Ophthalmologist Continuing Education Recognition Award. Dr. Hardten entered private practice in 1993 with Drs. Richard L. Lindstrom and Thomas W. Samuelson, also founding partners of Minnesota Eye Consultants. He is an attending ophthalmologist at Phillips Eye Institute in Minneapolis, MN, as well.   • Elizabeth A. Davis, M.D., F.A.C.S.

    Elizabeth A. Davis, M.D., F.A.C.S. is an ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in corneal, cataract, and refractive surgery. She was born in Boston and grew up in Annapolis, MD, where she was the valedictorian of her high school class. She attended Cornell University as an undergraduate, graduating summa cum laude in mathematics with distinction in all subjects (top 5% of her class). She was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Mortar Board National Honor Societies. She was selected as a Presidential Scholar and received several research awards. Dr. Davis completed her doctor of medicine degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, graduating first in her class. She received a Dean’s Award and Lange Medical Student Award each year of medical school. She also received the Franklin Paine Mall Prize in anatomy, Hewlett-Packard Top Medical Graduate Award, and the Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Award. She was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and won research awards as well as the prestigious William Stewart Halsted Award in surgery. She completed four years of cardiac surgery residency at Johns Hopkins before changing specialties to ophthalmology. At Johns Hopkins, she also completed a two-year immunology research fellowship, being supported by an American Heart Association Fellowship Award and Stetler Research Award. For her ophthalmology residency, Dr. Davis attended Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. She then received a HEED Ophthalmic Foundation Scholarship to complete subspecialty fellowship training in cornea, external disease, refractive surgery, and glaucoma at Minnesota Eye Consultants. She ranked in the 99th percentile on her Ophthalmology Board examinations. Dr. Davis is an attending surgeon and partner of Minnesota Eye Consultants. She is also an adjunct assistant clinical professor at the University of Minnesota. She is a member of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), Refractive Surgery Interest Group and the International Society of Refractive Surgery. She has been a member of the AAO Committee for Ophthalmic Technology Development, the ASCRS Refractive Surgery Committee, and ASCRS Government Relations Committee. Dr. Davis is the Founder and Director of The Vision Project, a program created in 2002 through the Minnesota Eye Foundation to provide charitable eye surgery to qualifying patients in need. She is also the Founder and Director of Strides 4 Sight, a yearly 5K Walk/Run and Kids’ Fun Run that raises funds to support The Vision Project as well as the medical needs of other patients without financial resources.

  • William J. Lipham, M.D., F.A.C.S.

    Ophthalmologist

    William J. Lipham, MD is a board certified Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology specializing in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants. Dr. Lipham’s specialties include surgery of the eyelids, tear drainage system and the orbit. In addition to managing complex medical and surgical cases, he also provides a broad array of facial rejuvenation services, including cosmetic eyelid surgery, small incision endoscopic forehead lifts as well as Juvederm and Botulinum toxin injections for wrinkle reduction. He was born and raised in Madison, WI and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where his undergraduate studies in biology and zoology led him to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Lipham received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. After his first year of medical school training, Dr. Lipham was selected to participate in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute-National Institutes of Health (HHMI-NIH) Research Scholars Program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. During his two-year NIH fellowship, he published three papers and received a young investigators award, valued at ¥75,000, from the Secretariat of the 5th International Symposium on the Immunology and Immunopathology of the Eye in Tokyo, Japan. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Lipham was chosen by a panel of NIH scientists to receive a $49,800.00 merit scholarship from HHMI for demonstrating ”Outstanding potential as a future leader in academic medicine”. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Lipham completed his transitional internship at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, where he met his wife Azura. During his internship, Dr. Lipham traveled to Vietnam with the Aloha Medical Mission where he worked with a group of American eye surgeons who taught local doctors how to surgically reconstruct patients’ eyelids and faces who had sustained severe trauma. This experience sparked an interest in pursuing additional training as an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Lipham is a Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology and American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is an active member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS), American Academy of Ophthalmology, and American Medical Association. He served as the Secretary of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology and is a past President of the Minneapolis Ophthalmological Society. In addition to these activities, he is a surgical consultant for a number of medical device companies, is a frequent lecturer at scientific meetings, and has published numerous articles and chapters in the fields of ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery.

  • Patrick J. Riedel, M.D.

    Ophthalmologist

    Dr. Patrick Riedel is a board-certified partner of Minnesota Eye Consultants. He is fellowship trained in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma and cataracts. In addition, he is specifically trained in multiple refractive surgery techniques such as LASIK, PRK, and refractive implant lenses. Dr. Riedel graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College in 1987 where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He continued his education by attending the University of Minnesota Medical School. While there he received multiple scholarships for merit, and was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society in his third year. He served as the president of this organization during his last year of medical school. After completing an internship year at Hennepin County Medical Center, he then pursued his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Iowa, consistently ranked one of the top five ophthalmology training programs in the nation. He served as chief resident during the last six months of his residency. Dr. Riedel continued his sub-specialty training, completing a glaucoma and cataract surgery fellowship at the University of Utah John Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, and has been in practice since 1998. As an assistant clinical professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Riedel is actively involved in the clinical and surgical education of residents and fellows. He is an instructor in ocular pharmacology at Regions Hospital, and a consultant for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis. He frequently lectures to local and regional ophthalmologists and optometrists and serves as an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, the credentialing organization for physicians seeking to practice ophthalmology.   • Sherman W. Reeves, M.D., M.P.H.

    Dr. Sherman Reeves is a board certified ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in cornea and external disease, cataract, and refractive surgery. Dr. Reeves was raised in Manhattan, KS, and then attended University of Kansas where he was elected president of the 25,000 member student body in his junior year. While at KU, he also served on the Kansas University Athletic Corporation board of directors and served as president of the Kansas Union Memorial Corporation board of directors, a $14 million non-profit corporation responsible for the operation of the Kansas Student Unions. In his junior year, Dr. Reeves was awarded a Harry S. Truman Scholarship, a prestigious national award recognizing outstanding public service. Upon graduating with distinction, he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and received the Agnes Wright Strickland Award from the Chancellor for outstanding scholarship and service to the university. Dr. Reeves completed his doctor of medicine degree at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. He also completed a master’s degree in public health at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health on a merit-based, full tuition Watt/Hansel Fellowship. While at Johns Hopkins, he was recognized for his research efforts with the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute Dana Center Student Award, the Henry Strong Denison Award for Excellence in Research and the Sibley and Catherine Hoobler Award for Excellence in Public Health and Medicine. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Reeves completed the University of Maryland’s Mercy Medical Center internship in internal medicine. Dr. Reeves obtained his ophthalmology residency training at the Duke University Eye Center in Durham, NC, where he was awarded the Dastgheib Eye Surgery Award in recognition for outstanding surgical skills. As a resident, he was also recognized with several national honors including the American Medical Association Foundation Leadership Award and was a co-recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Star Award for creation of a regional resident advocacy program. He then served a year on the Duke faculty as Chief Resident, with responsibility for the operation and education programs of the Duke ophthalmology residency. Dr. Reeves then obtained subspecialty fellowship training in cornea, external disease, glaucoma and refractive surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants. During his fellowship year, he was awarded the Claes Dohlman Society Award, given to a single individual nationally each year for excellence in cornea subspecialty training. Dr. Melicher attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN for undergraduate training and went on to medical school at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She finished residency training at the University of Minnesota Medical School where she rotated with the Minnesota Eye Consultants physicians. Dr. Melicher completed her fellowship training under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Nerad at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA and Cincinnati Eye Institute in Cincinnati, OH. Dr. Melicher is Board Certified in Ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She has completed fellowship training through the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.   • Christine L. Larsen, M.D.

    Dr. Christine Larsen specializes in the treatment of glaucoma and cataract surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants. Originally from Fremont, Nebraska, Dr. Larsen pursued her undergraduate degree at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, graduating with Highest Distinction. While there, she was a four-time recipient of the Nebraska Wesleyan University Scholar Award and was a member of the Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society. Dr. Larsen completed her doctor of medicine degree at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. During medical school, Dr. Larsen received the Bookmeyer Scholarship, the Rudolph & Gerald Schenken, MD Scholarship and the Nebraska Medical Foundation Student Research Grant. She obtained her ophthalmology residency training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident and was honored with the Outstanding Resident Research Award. She completed her fellowship in Glaucoma at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI and was awarded a number of other scholarships and grants throughout her academic career. Dr. Larsen is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. She has been heavily involved in medical mission initiatives, including participating as an associate Ophthalmologist with ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital during a service mission to Surabaya, Indonesia in March 2012.

    Dr. Omar Awad is a board certified ophthalmologist, specializing in cornea disease, cataract removal, and refractive treatments. He received his medical degree in ophthalmology from the University of Minnesota Medical School. He completed his internship at the Hennepin County Medical Center and his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Eye and Ear Institute. As part of Dr. Awad’s extensive training, he has completed a fellowship in Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive surgery at Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Awad is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota, and he lectures internationally on cataract and lens implant surgery. He is a current member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), the International Society of Refractive Surgeons, the Cornea Society and the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Awad has consistently received Mpls St. Paul Magazine ‘Top Doctor’ honors. Dr. Awad has four daughters that keep him and his wife very busy with all of their activities.   • Mark S. Hansen, M.D.

    Dr. Hansen specializes in cornea, external disease, anterior segment, cataract, glaucoma and refractive surgery. Dr. Hansen completed his undergraduate coursework and Doctorate in Medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He was awarded the Linda and Derrick Wood scholarship and two medical scholarships. After a one-year residency at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Following his residency he was selected to be the Chief Resident where he was involved with resident education and surgical training. Dr. Hansen performs cataract and intraocular lens implant surgery, corneal transplants and other surgeries for patients with corneal diseases, along with a variety of glaucoma procedures. He also performs refractive surgery, including laser vision correction procedures such as LASIK and PRK as well as refractive lens implant surgery. His hobbies include spending time with his wife and kids. He enjoys coaching little league basketball and soccer, and attending dance and gymnastic performances. As a family, they enjoy traveling and exploring new sites. He also likes to spend his free time playing basketball and attending or watching college sporting events.

    Dr. Clara M. Choo is originally from Toronto, Canada. She specializes in glaucoma and cataract surgery. Dr. Choo completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Biological Basis of Behavior. She went on to attend medical school at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. She has received several research grants, awards and merit-based scholarships, including the Mayo Clinic scholarship, throughout the course of her education. After spending a transitional year at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL, Dr. Choo completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She was chosen to be Chief Resident her final year, as well as the Advocacy Ambassador for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Choo recently completed a glaucoma fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Choo has authored numerous abstracts/publications and presented at several national conferences. She is actively involved in volunteer activities and mission trips. Originally from Madison, WI, Dr. Stewart completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in molecular biology. She then graduated with research honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. She completed her internship at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI and her residency at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor, MI. Dr. Stewart completed her fellowship with the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for oculoplastic surgery at the Mayo Clinic/the University of Minnesota. Dr. Stewart has received many honors, awards and research grants throughout the course of her education, including the Marck Gichert Memorial Award in the Neurosciences from UW-Madison and the Michigan Ophthalmology Trainee Career Development Award. She was also chosen for the American Association of Neurological Surgeon Medical Student Research Fellowship while in medical school. Dr. Stewart is board certified in ophthalmology. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a candidate member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She has authored numerous book chapters and abstracts/publications and presented at several national conferences, and she currently serves as a reviewer for the American Journal of Ophthalmology Case Reports. In her free time, Dr. Stewart enjoys spending time with her husband and two little ones, downhill skiing, yoga and cooking with family and friends. She was also a professional violinist for years before going to medical school.

  • Eugene O. Gullingsrud, M.D., F.A.C.S.

    Ophthalmologist

    Dr. Gullingsrud is a general ophthalmologist who has been in practice for more than 25 years in the Metro area. Originally from Fargo and a charter member of his high school Hall of Fame, he graduated with Honors from Stanford University and the University of Minnesota Medical School. He completed his internship at Dartmouth University and residency through the University of Minnesota. He has taught ophthalmology to medical students, residents, and doctors worldwide. Dr. Gullingsrud specializes in medical eye care for patients with diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataract. He is committed to education and long-term family care of adults and children. He provides comprehensive eye exams for patients with most forms of insurance as well as charitable care through EyeCare America and the VA Hospital. His interest in International Ophthalmology has taken him to Asia, the Pacific, Africa, and Europe. He has received recognition as a Top Doctor from the American Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American College of Surgeons, Fairview Foundation, Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine, and the Sight and Hearing Association. An avid Minnesota sports fan, Dr. Gullingsrud enjoys travel, national parks, scuba diving, hiking, and bicycling. He has a passion for volunteerism and regularly participates in eye screenings and free clinics in Minneapolis and has been a part of the Minnesota Special Olympics since 1991.   • Marshall Huang, M.D.

    Ophthalmologist

    Dr. Huang practices out of our Blaine office. He graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University, double majoring in Nutritional Sciences and Biological Sciences with a concentration in Neurobiology and Behavior. He completed his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, followed by his Ophthalmology residency at the John A. Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has participated in several poster and oral presentations, including The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Annual Meeting, in Honolulu, (2018) and the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons 11th Biennial Satellite Tumor Symposium, (2015), in Washington, D.C. Dr. Huang also has extensive research experience, working in the labs at the University of Utah, Moran Eye Center Bernstein Lab, UPMC Center for Image Guided Neurosurgery, The Weill Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology, and Cornell University Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Dr. Huang has received several honors and awards, including a grant from the University of Pittsburgh, as a part of the Physician Scientist Training Program, (2015-2018); Walter L. Copeland Medical Student Scholar (2015); and Dean’s Summer Research Project also at the University of Pittsburgh (2014). He has been an active in his community throughout his training, serving on the executive committee for the University of Utah Moran Eye Center, Bloomberg Library Committee, and working as Chief Resident at Fourth Street Clinic, in Salt Lake City, where monthly ophthalmology clinics were put on to serve homeless patients in Utah.   • Thomas Meirick, M.D.

    Opthalmologist, Cornea Fellow

    Dr. Meirick specializes in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery and practices primarily at our Woodbury and Minnetonka locations. Dr. Meirick grew up in the small town of Protivin, Iowa (population 280). He attended the University of Iowa for his undergraduate studies, where he graduated with distinction and majored in Economics and Biochemistry. He stayed in Iowa City after graduation, earning his medical degree from the Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Meirick was first exposed to ophthalmology during medical school, and quickly developed a passion for the field. He completed his internship at Presence Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago, IL, and his residency training at the University of Washington in Seattle. Throughout his education and training, Dr. Meirick has received several honors and awards, including the Peter Armstrong Award for the Best Quality, Safety, Value Paper, the Iowa Orthopaedic Society Medical Student Research Award, and participating as a member of the academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Meirick has published peer-reviewed articles in several of the most respected journals in ophthalmology, including Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmology Science.     Ophthalmologist

    Paul M. Tani, MD obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota and his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School. He completed both his post-graduate internship and ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota, with his internship located at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in the Internal Medicine Dept. Following his residency, he completed a retina fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Before joining Minnesota Eye Consultants, Dr. Tani practiced at Tani Eye Associates and Clinic, PA (1977-2018). Dr. Tani is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. His professional affiliations include the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology and the Minnesota Medical Society/Ramsey County Medical Society.     Ahmad Fahmy, OD, FAAO, received his professional training and Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry. He completed residency training in the perioperative care of glaucoma, anterior segment pathology, and refractive surgery with Minnesota Eye Consultants, P.A. He earned Fellowship from the American Academy of Optometry and joined Minnesota Eye Consultants, P.A. as a staff doctor of optometry. He has been involved in the clinical care of disadvantaged populations and is devoted to continued involvement in the development of philanthropic eye care initiatives. He is actively involved in clinical research trials and has a special interest in ocular surface disease. Dr. Fahmy co-founded Eyes-On Dry Eye. Dr. Fahmy is an Adjunct Faculty Assistant Professor of the Illinois College of Optometry and has enjoyed mentoring many students and recent graduates.     Dr. Fogal, originally from Brainerd, Minnesota, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN and then went on to receive his Doctorate of Optometry from Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Oregon in 2005. He is a member of Beta Sigma Kappa, the International Optometric Honor Society.     Optometrist

    Dr. Mona Fahmy is a board-certified optometrist who has completed a fellowship in refractive surgery care, anterior segment pathology, glaucoma and urgent care with Minnesota Eye Consultants. Raised in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Dr. Fahmy earned a full-ride Presidential Scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism with an emphasis in newspaper editing from the University of Florida. Dr. Fahmy earned her doctorate degree from the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO) in Chicago. During her time at ICO, she kept busy serving as class representative. She also enjoyed mentoring students as a teaching assistant and open lab tutor, while earning honors herself. Before graduating from ICO, she was presented with the American Academy of Optometry Advantage Scholarship and the Wildermuth Foundation Scholarship, each for academic excellence demonstrated by a student leader. Dr. Fahmy also earned the Alcon Case Report Award and the America’s Best “Your Passion for Optometry” Award.     Dr. Gill grew up in Montreal, Quebec. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Health Sciences and Biology from the Marie-Victorin College in Montreal, graduating as the valedictorian of her school and with special distinctions from the Science and the French departments. Dr. Gill received her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Montreal School of Optometry. During her last year of study, she received the American Optometric Foundation – Carl Zeiss Vision Fellowship award, the Eschenbach Award for Excellence, the LWW Vision Care New OD Scholarship and a Research Scholarship from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Upon graduation, she moved to Minneapolis to complete her optometric residency at Minnesota Eye Consultants, specializing in ocular disease and surgical co-management. In 2011, Dr. Gill joined Minnesota Eye Consultants as a staff optometrist after spending a few years in private practice.     Cristelle E. Boots, OD joined the Doctor of Optometry team at Minnesota Eye Consultants in 2021. Seeing patients out of our Blaine and Woodbury offices, Dr. Boots specializes in Primary Eye Care and Dry Eye. Dr. Boots earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Winnipeg and received her Doctor of Optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry. She has completed four externships: The Eye Centers of South Florida Dan and Hoffman, Miami, FL, the Illinois Eye Institute, Chicago, IL, Boyco Image Optometry, Vancouver, and William Chapel Jr. Veterans Outpatient Clinic, Daytona Beach, FL. Following graduation, Dr. Boots worked with ophthalmologists in Indiana, seeing a lot of complex ocular disease such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy and doing pre and post op surgical care.     Dr. Mark Buboltz serves as the Optometric Residency Coordinator at Minnesota Eye Consultants and is adjunct clinical faculty at the Illinois College of Optometry. Dr. Buboltz has special interests in dry eye management and specialty contact lenses as well as ocular disease, urgent care, surgery management, and primary care. Originally from Redwood Falls, MN, he completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD and optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL. While at the Illinois College of Optometry, he received awards of merit for clinical excellence, the school’s Trustee’s Scholarship, and graduated magna cum laude. After graduation, he completed his residency in ocular disease and ocular surgery co-management at Minnesota Eye Consultants. He has presented at various local and national conferences including the American Academy of Optometry, Minnesota Optometric Association, and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.   • Johnna D. Hobbs, O.D.

    Dr. Johnna Hobbs is originally from Aurora, Il. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Minnesota, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in humanities. She then went on to receive her doctorate from the Illinois College of Optometry, graduating Cum Laude. There, she served as a low vision teaching assistant and was the fundraising chair and president of Optometric Services to Humanities. She also received the Feinbloom Low Vision Award. Dr. Hobbs has vast experience working with refractive patients. Before joining Minnesota Eye Consultants, Dr. Hobbs practiced at TLC Laser Eye Centers of Edina where she served as both clinical director and clinic manager. At TLC, she worked with patients seeking LASIK surgery, cataract surgery and implantable collamer lenses. Dr. Hobbs lives in Edina with her husband and two teenage sons. Her hobbies include gardening, cooking and playing with her Jack Russell Terrier. She is also the coach for FTC Robotics through the US FIRST program.

    Dr. Gina Doeden earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Gustavus Adolphus College, and then went on to earn her doctorate from the Illinois College of Optometry. She completed her graduate training at the Illinois Eye Institute, Spectrios Institute for Low Vision, The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired, Franciscan St. James Hospital and the West Side VA Medical Center in Chicago.   • Mark A. Dsouza, PA-C, MBBS

    Mark Dsouza is a Physician Assistant, originally from Goa, India. He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees at St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India in 1980 and his Master of Science (Ophthalmology) degree at the Post Graduate Institute in Chandigarh, India in 1985. In 2012, he obtained his Master of Physician Assistant Sciences degree from Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA. Mark has 40,000+ hours of clinical experience as a comprehensive ophthalmologist in India, where he regularly performed a variety of eye surgeries including cataract surgery, LASIK and PRK. Since moving to the United States, Mark has worked in primary care, specialty eye care and urgent care settings as a Physician Assistant. Most recently, he practiced at the Wilmer Eye Institute and the Emergency Medicine department at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Mark is a member of the American Association of Physician Assistants, and he is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. He is also certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and CPR. Mark has authored numerous abstracts/publications and received several awards and honors throughout the course of his career.   • Nicole Bergman, O.D.

    Optometrist

    Dr. Nicole Bergman practices out of our Minnetonka and Blaine locations, specializing in Primary Eye Care. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota and completed her Doctor of Optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. Dr. Bergman completed four externships, one at each of the following practices; Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI; Eye West Vision Clinic in Rogers, MN; Illinois Eye Institute in Chicago, IL; and University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN.     Dr. Sonja Iverson-Hill is a native of Glencoe, Minnesota. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Minnesota Duluth. She completed her optometry degree at the Michigan College of Optometry, and obtained clinical experience at Eye Associates of Lee’s Summit in Lee’s Summit, Missouri; Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and the Michigan College of Optometry in Big Rapids, Michigan. Today, Dr. Iverson-Hill’s focus at Minnesota Eye Consultants is in corneal and contact lens management, and primary care optometry. She is a certified optometrist by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry and has a special interest in specialty contact lens fitting, post-surgical management and ocular disease. Dr. Iverson-Hill is a certified orthokeratology specialist and a member of notable organizations including the Minnesota Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.     Dr. Jenness will be practicing out of our Woodbury office. Dr. Jenness is originally from Spirit Lake, Iowa and received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology Health Professions from Northwestern College, in Orange City, Iowa. He received his Doctor of Optometry from Michigan College of Optometry, in Big Rapids, Michigan, where he graduated with highest distinction.     Dr. Liaboe specializes in glaucoma and practices at our Woodbury and Blaine locations. He is originally from Dubuque, Iowa and first moved to Minnesota for college. He graduated magna cum laude from St. Olaf College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry and completed medical school at Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine - University of Iowa. After medical school, Dr. Liaboe completed a transitional internship with the Hennepin County Medical Center, followed by an ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota – Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences. Throughout his training, he co-authored multiple scientific papers and presented at several national meetings. In addition, Dr. Liaboe has won several awards, including the Harry Friedman Research Award, which recognizes the resident who presents the outstanding research project of the year and the Harry Plotke Award, awarded annually to the resident with the most outstanding clinical skills, compassion, and concern for the patient. Dr. Liaboe also plays an active role in the Ophthalmology community, as a member of several associations, including the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology. In his free time, Dr. Liaboe enjoys taking advantage of the numerous outdoor activities that Minnesota is known for, including evening runs in the bitter January cold with his 3-year-old goldendoodle, Liam. Chase and his wife, Morgan, had a pandemic wedding in a courthouse in December of 2020, and are eagerly awaiting their delayed celebration in December 2021.
